In the 21st century anyone can afford audio recording equipment capable of giving very good results. What is unaffordable is the space to put the equipment in. Having recently moved from London I took advantage of a new site and had a room built to record in without a separate control room. Recording in the same room as the artist gives an immediacy and speed of working often lost when the artist is in one room and the engineer / producer is in another.

The new premises are in a custom built Dry/Wet room; large bass traps and extensive use of Auralex acoustic foam have created a mixing “dry” end, a recording “wet” centre section and a “50/50” drum kit end.

“Steve is a fantastic recording artist, we worked together to create my album Jazzy Masala and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome! Highly recommended and the best in the game!”

 – Yousuf Ali Khan

With all parties in the same room, monitoring at the recording stage is critical: for that reason, the monitoring system has been upgraded to give 4 separate headphone monitoring mixes using hardware to avoid latency.
Movable absorbent hangings in the centre section give a variable amount of absorption when recording vocals using a reflection filter.

Newly installed Sonarworks Sound ID reference software offers a completely flat frequency response for mixing & mastering, so that the new Rode NT1 condenser mic can now demonstrate its flat frequency response.

Every piece of equipment is a compromise between cost, performance and size and I have tried to get the best performance for the money in every case, even in the cabling; essential if you are not going to induce extra noise and you want to be able to disassemble and re-assemble your gear.
